Scottish Road Signs
I anticipated an encounter with God on a recent trip to Scotland. Sandwiched between time in the bustling city of Edinburgh, we took an excursion to the Highlands - the “thin places” where the boundary between heaven and earth is said to diminish so that one can hear more easily from God.
And though the landscape was other-worldly and the waterfalls and “fairy pools” glorious, I received no revelation.
Room to breathe, for sure.
A deep awareness of God’s presence, yes.
But it wasn’t until our final night back in noisy Edinburgh that God’s message became clear as a road sign.
In fact, it *was* a road sign.

I’m still unsure what that means for drivers…
But it led me to reflect on the season in which I find myself.
I hoped for greater light,
Yet received so much in the darkness.
The desire to know,
Led to peace in the unknown.
Letting go,
Falling into mystery.
Broken, yet Beloved.
Shame detaching.
Seeking The Way -
The way-of-being in this world.
Nuance bridges truth and grace.
Silence and stillness spark a new of rhythm of life.
Anxious prayers give way to deep breathing.
Give Way.
In the U.S, our signs say Yield.
To paraphrase Henri Nouwen, each time I Give Way - each time I yield and surrender something within me that hinders formation - I perceive God’s sculpting hand at work. Something shifts. The real me emerges.
Give way.
